The event was related to an issue in project management, in which developers disagreed with the leadership of FFmpeg. On March 13, 2011, a group of FFmpeg developers decided to fork the project under the name Libav. The logo uses a zigzag pattern that shows how MPEG video codecs handle entropy encoding. The name of the project is inspired by the MPEG video standards group, together with "FF" for "fast forward", so FFmpeg stands for "Fast Forward Moving Picture Experts Group". Some FFmpeg developers were also part of the MPlayer project. The project was started by Fabrice Bellard (using the pseudonym "Gérard Lantau") in 2000, and was led by Michael Niedermayer from 2004 until 2015. Encoders and decoders for many audio and video file formats are included, making it highly useful for the transcoding of common and uncommon media files.įFmpeg is published under the LGPL-2.1-or-later or GPL-2.0-or-later, depending on which options are enabled.

įFmpeg is part of the workflow of many other software projects, and its libraries are a core part of software media players such as VLC, and has been included in core processing for YouTube and Bilibili. Among included libraries are libavcodec, an audio/video codec library used by many commercial and free software products, libavformat (Lavf), an audio/video container mux and demux library, and libavfilter, a library for enhancing and editing filters through a Gstreamer-like filtergraph. It is widely used for format transcoding, basic editing (trimming and concatenation), video scaling, video post-production effects and standards compliance ( SMPTE, ITU).įFmpeg also includes other tools: ffplay, a simple media player and ffprobe, a command-line tool to display media information. At its core is the command-line ffmpeg tool itself, designed for processing of video and audio files.

I think the current makeportable2.cmd file for extracting the required files from the itunes installer is here, if you want to update the encoder to the latest version, or the 64 bit version, at some stage.Various, including Windows, macOS, and Linux ( executable programs are only available from third parties, as the project only distributes source code) It's a year or so old now, but everything runs on XP. There's also conversion and DSP presets for downmixing and/or compression. The necessary files for encoding with QAAC are included. About the only thing you need to do is download and put ffmpeg in the encoders folder for decoding/encoding some audio types. It's ready to go for encoding with the freely available AAC encoders, and it comes with conversion and encoder presets for converting just about any format to any format.

It's a portable version so you can just unzip and run it. Here's a link for a version of foobar2000 I uploaded a while back. QAAC is the only encoder (as far as I know) with an option to not pad the beginning of the audio with silence. If that information is present, MKVToolNix will use it to remove the padding and/or automatically apply an audio delay to compensate so the AV sync remains exact. Usually for AAC, information is saved to the MP4/M4A container so players can skip the padding (gapless playback). Lossy encoders also add padding to the beginning and end of the audio.
The length of an audio frame is quite small.

There's no need to install itunes.Īll lossy encoders use frames, so the audio has to be cut on an audio frame, but any decent muxing program would add an appropriate audio delay after removing an audio frame when cutting, assuming it's necessary. If you don't, you can download the full/offline itunes installer and extract the necessary files. If you have itunes installed you can download and run QAAC. QAAC is considered to be one of the best, if not the best, AAC encoder. Of the freely available encoders, it's probably the lowest quality, although they're all quite good at decent bitrates.įraunhofer AAC is probably the encoder supplied with the last version of WinAMP. I'm guessing, but I think AAC (lav) is probably the native ffmpeg encoder.
